Confessions of an e-Smoker

e-Sink or e-Swim?

With e-cigarette Free Trials and heavily discounted Starter Kits becoming increasingly popular in superstores and online it seems clear that electronic cigarettes are here to stay.

Electronic cigarette companies often make huge claims to encourage smokers but can we really be sure these are accurate?

We interviewed author and ex-tobacco smoker Peter Carson for an inside scoop on 12 months tobacco free.  Having shifted to electronic-cigarettes just over one year ago David was ready to spill the beans on his experience to date.  Did the humble electronic cigarette live up to it’s growing reputation of was it over-hyped and overpriced?

David, when did you decide to quit smoking tobacco and why?

For me it was health.  I decided to quit in April 2012.  It wasn’t the first time and back then I half expected another failed attempt and thought I’d probably see myself back on the cigs before long.  I’d tried a few other methods, I’d used the gum without much success, nicotine patches weren’t for me and the spray gave me uncontrollable hiccups.  A couple of friends had been raving about using electronic cigarettes on flights and in the office etc, so I thought what the heck – free trial me.

What e-cigarette brand did you go for?

I chopped and changed in the early days, I started with an E-lites starter kit which I remember thinking was quite expensive at the time.  It was a good intro, I was off tobacco from day one but the oversize E-lites felt clumsy in my fingers and I wasn’t comfortable in public so after a few weeks I switched to Freshcigs which are closer in size and shape to conventional cigarettes.  I loved the use of Freshcigs and they were great while they lasted – the trouble was they didn’t seem to last very long.  Being smaller they didn’t hold as much battery charge or nicotine vapour so I was caught out a few times and ended up keeping disposables with me just in case.  By then I’d realised e-cigarettes come in all shapes and sizes, I was a full convert and I’d spent some time in the forums talking preferences with a few of the longer term e-smokers I’d met.

The brand I settled down with doesn’t look anything like a cigarette.  I use the Ecigwizard “cartomiser” – whatever that means – it seems to have a half decent battery life and it has a clear shaft so I can see how much e-liquid is left.  To be completely honest I just like the feel of it – but it’s not the brand I would have chosen 12 months ago.

Okay so you’re an e-smoker now.  Any good?

 Haha – it’s great.

Seriously though – any benefits or is it all a bunch of nonsense?

Well I quit for personal health reasons so the biggest benefits have been in that department.  I’m Forty next year and I hadn’t run more than a few hundred yards in years.  The trouble was I couldn’t.

It was quite something – I could smell again within a week or so and I remember going for a run a week or so later and genuinely feeling air in my lungs in a way that I hadn’t for years.  It reminded me of my childhood and spurred me on to get fit.  I’ve been running once a week for a year now, I can make a five mile run pretty easily and I’ve been toying with a half marathon in June.  The fact is my lungs are in great shape now and it simply wouldn’t have been possible as a tobacco smoker.

From Forty per day we’re guessing you’ve saved a small fortune.  Care to share?

None of your business – but yes.  I bought a car in December for less than the money I’d saved over 8 months.

Okay thanks for making us jealous.  Any last words for the tobacco smokers out there?

E-cigs aren’t for everyone but in my experience the smarter ones tend to figure it out.  Best thing to do is pick up a free trial and give it a go.  There’s nothing pleasant about smoking yourself to death and it’s never too late to quit.  Switching to e-cigarettes was like switching my entire life to High Definition.  I can think clearer, run faster, I can smell, my fingers and clothes don’t stink of tobacco… and I lost a bunch of weight now that I can exercise again.  Who wouldn’t want that?
